Enhance your visit to Teos Ancient City with an unforgettable journey to Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary, two of the most significant cultural and spiritual landmarks in Turkey.
Ephesus, one of the best-preserved ancient cities of the Roman world, features remarkable monuments including the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, Marble Street, and the Temple of Hadrian. Once a thriving commercial and religious center, it offers an exceptional glimpse into life in antiquity.
Just a short drive from Ephesus lies the House of the Virgin Mary, a peaceful pilgrimage site believed by many Christians to be the final residence of the Virgin Mary. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Koressos, the sanctuary welcomes visitors of all faiths seeking history, spirituality, and tranquility.
Together with Teos, these iconic destinations create a rich cultural experience, combining Ionian heritage, classical archaeology, and early Christian history in one memorable journey.
Teos is located on the western coast of Turkey, near the charming town of Sigacik in the district of Seferihisar, approximately 50 km southwest of Izmir and belongs to the Aegean Region of Turkey. An area famous for its coastline, olive groves, vineyards, and numerous ancient Greek and Roman cities.
Teos was founded by Ionian Greek settlers around the 10th century BC and became one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League. The city flourished because of maritime trade, agriculture, wine production and cultural life.
Teos became especially famous for the worship of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, theatre, and celebration.
One of its greatest monuments is the Temple of Dionysus, designed during the Hellenistic period by the renowned architect Hermogenes, whose architectural innovations influenced many later temples across the ancient world.
Teos was also home to the Artists of Dionysus, one of the earliest professional associations of actors, musicians, poets, and performers in the ancient Mediterranean. This made the city an important cultural and artistic center.
During Roman times, Teos remained prosperous, though earthquakes and shifting trade routes eventually contributed to its decline. The settlement was gradually abandoned during the Byzantine period.
The modern town of Sigacik has become one of the most attractive destinations in Aegean coast while retaining its traditional character. Highlights among others are the preserved Ottoman fortress, narrow streets lined with stone houses, family run cafeterias and seafood restaurants, weekly organic farmers market, fresh fish from the marina, olive oil and local wines, small boutique hotels and guesthouses, sailing and yacht tourism.
Seferihisar was Turkey's first member of the international Cittaslow (Slow City) movement, promoting sustainable tourism, local food, traditional crafts, and a relaxed lifestyle. The surrounding countryside is covered with olive groves, vineyards, citrus orchards, and small farms, offering an authentic taste of the Aegean way of life.
