Paragliding in Fethiye

There are two types of people in Fethiye.

Those who look up at the sky and say, “Wow! I want to fly!”

And those who look up and say, “Wow! Look at those brave people!”

I belonged very firmly to the second group.

For now.

While exploring the Fethiye region, I found myself watching people prepare for paragliding. And honestly, I became almost as interested in the preparation as the flight itself.

The parachutes were spread out. Harnesses were checked. Equipment was carefully prepared. Instructors were busy with their final checks while the future flying humans looked increasingly excited.

I, meanwhile, was doing my own important safety procedure:

Standing safely on the ground.

Very professionally.

Then came the moment.

A few final checks, a little running, and suddenly they were airborne.

Just like that.

One minute they were standing beside me. The next, they were floating above Fethiye with the mountains behind them and the beautiful Mediterranean stretching below.

I watched them getting smaller and smaller in the sky and thought:

“This looks absolutely amazing.”

Followed immediately by:

“Nope.”

Followed approximately thirty seconds later by:

“...Maybe.”

Because that is the dangerous thing about watching other people have adventures. At first you think they are completely crazy.

Then you start wondering if you might be crazy enough to join them.

From the ground, Fethiye is beautiful.

From the air, it must be something completely different — turquoise water, dramatic mountains, coastline and that wonderful feeling of looking at Turkey from a perspective you simply cannot get from a tour bus.

I didn't try it this time.

But I have a feeling that Fethiye has planted a little idea in my head.

And that idea is wearing a parachute.
